Mats: Buying vs Renting
Is renting a mat better than buying? You might be surprised at the findings! If you are considering buying or renting, check out the myths below before making any purchase decisions. As always, we are happy to answer any questions you have about the quality of our mats and the pricing difference.
Fact: The average cost of a rental mat is 20 cents per square foot per week! One 3’x5′ mat @ $3 per week will cost $780 over a five year rental agreement. The cost to purchase this mat is $100. The math is simple.
Fact: Most facilities have a janitorial staff/service who clean their mats regularly if not daily. This makes owning your own mats FAR cheaper than renting.
Fact: Mat rental programs offer a limited range of mat sizes/colors/uses to minimize inventory costs, many of their mats are “finishing mats” to be used after a wiper mat. Owning your own mats will allow you to exactly fit the right type of mat, size and color to meet the needs of your organization.
Fact: Most rental companies use a nylon face fiber that crushes flat after a short amount of time allowing dirt to sit on top of the mat and track into the building, increasing the overall cleaning costs by not catching dirt and moisture at the door.
Fact: Unless you “rent” mats with your logo on them, you will receive mats that will range in age from new to as old as 10 years old
Fact: Most outside scraper mats are not changed at all. Why pay a “rental” cleaning fee if you are cleaning these yourself? If the mats do not look dirty, they may not be changed and kitchen mats are usually not changed since many are “rented” through a lease program.
Fact: Purchased mats may be made entirely from recycled materials, require only one delivery charge (not weekly, monthly, etc as in rental programs) and are subjected to far less chemicals and waste less energy than rental mats that are washed and dried repeatedly
